This passage in Deuteronomy 1 practically jumped off the page at me this morning. God promised the Israelites victory. The land He was sending them to was called the "Promised" Land, for crying out loud! And still, they were intimidated by stories. Nothing they had seen with their own two eyes.
Despite an all powerful God at their back that had delivered them out of Egypt with TEN plagues, despite a pillar of fire that followed and protected them by night and a cloud covered them by day, despite an ENTIRE SEA PARTING BEFORE THEM, they quivered because "giants were in their territory".
WHAT?!
You cannot be serious. I balked at this when I realized the gravity of it all. Not only that, but THEN when God gives them manna every morning [falling from the sky, mind you], it's still not enough. "Meat!" They dare require. And they don't even say please! They just grumble and complain! The audacity of the Israelites!
As I'm raging at their sheer stupidity and ignorance, a serious, but gentle voice breaks through my rant: "Anna. What makes you so different than them?"
Ouch.
Truth. God has performed miracle after miracle and shown me wonder after wonder and still I have had the gall to complain about what He hasn't done. Ugh. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.
Something I've been learning lately is that God is a promise keeper. Every good promise He's ever made has never been broken. God is not a liar. He cannot lie. (Heb. 6:17-18) And every promise He makes will come to pass regardless of what we do.
The only thing that the Israelites succeeded in doing was delaying His promise. Another forty years... Double ouch. But! "Not one of all the Lord's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled." (Jos. 21:45) Haha!! Victory! God fulfilled EVERY single promise He made to the house of Israel.
"Well, that doesn't necessarily mean that God is gonna keep His promises to me...."
Okay. That is flawed in SO many ways I don't even know where to begin. First and foremost: is God a liar? No. His word has been tried and proven true (Psalm 12:6). Then, really, I don't need to go any further. However, Galatians 3:29 says that "If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise."
God doesn't make promises and then change His mind. His word is true. He has the final say. What He says goes. Period. You can delay that all you want, but in the end, He will fulfill His promises to you.
Isn't it exciting?!
So pretty much, stop eating grumble cakes. We have 0 rights to complain about anything. Especially in a first world country. But God blesses us without us deserving any of it. We can be such spoiled brats. Instead of complaining about what God hasn't done yet or worrying whether or not He will do what He said He would do, thank God for all that He has already done and what He is going to do. Just as He promised.
Today is full of God's promises.
Just open up the Bible and see for yourself. :D
