Psalm 23

“I shall not be in want.”

That phrase. Most have this psalm memorized. But few understand what this portion means. Do people realize what they’re actually saying?

“I shall not be in want.” I will not be in a state of wanting. I will long for nothing. Why? Well, this portion of scripture is the latter half of a sentence. The beginning says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” So, I won’t want because the Lord is my shepherd. HE IS ENOUGH. Yet we forget this time and time again. I forget this daily. What does “enough” mean? As much or as many as required. To the required degree or extent; adequately. ENOUGH.

To the required extent. That means that whatever is required or necessary , He’ll most certainly take care of it, or meet this required degree. When we scream or shout during worship, “God, you are enough!” We are saying that no matter what goes down on this earth, no matter how bad stuff gets, no matter how poverty stricken, no matter how lonely, no matter how beaten that God is still enough.

So how many of us have actually meant what we’ve said? How many of us have understood the full weight of those words? How many people get the fact that we’re really asking for hell when we tell Him that He’s enough?

Is God really enough? Is He really enough for me? For you?

Is this God you claim you love REALLY sufficient for you? Is He HONESTLY all you need? When you look into the deepest corners of your heart, when you look into a mirror and stare at the face you know oh-so-well, is your god enough…. for you?

Because that’s the question, isn’t it? God most certainly is enough. It’s truth. But is He enough for you?

Honestly. He’s not for me. Because if He was, I would live very differently. Each day would have its own worries, but none of them would be my worries. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt. 28:11) Jesus told us Himself. These words came out of His mouth, were spoken by His lips. He said them for you. He told you, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Mt. 6:25-27)

This all makes sense, right? Logical sense. Daddy takes care of the birdies and we are far more valuable to Him than they are. And really, worrying doesn’t do any real good. So why worry? Hakkuna matata, right?

Not exactly. It’s true that we are far more valuable than a sparrow. It’s true that worry won’t add an hour, and it could very well take an hour or two away. But that doesn’t mean chuck everything out the window and just live because today will just “poof!” take care of itself. It’s deeper, stronger than that. It’s understanding that today does have its worries, it does have its menial tasks and responsibilities, but there is someone greater that’s got it all planned out. There’s someone who knows exactly how it’s all going to work.

So I guess when we say, “God you are enough,” are we telling Him that He is enough for us? Or are we just stating a fact that He already knows?

Will you let Him be enough for you? Will you let Him meet the requirements you have placed and others have even placed before you? In truth, that is what it is. It’s us allowing Him to be enough for us. To think that we allow God to do anything is absurd, but truth. It’s free will. It’s what makes love beautiful. It’s choice. It’s choosing Him. It’s allowing Him to fulfill His role in our lives. To be our Provider, our Father, our Sufficiency.

Our Enough.
