What "They" Won't Say

By: Anna Molinari

Standing in front of the mirror,
Facing your fears,
Hearing what all the voices say...
Real or otherwise...
"Look," they laugh, they sneer,
"At your reflection in the mirror.
"See your soul, black as a moonless night,
"Despite the way you fight.
"You are damned, destined for failure,
"This dominion you think you have over the land...
"As if it were planned...
"You are lost, fatherless because of your pride, your sin.
"Because of where you've been, where you are.
"You've wandered far from your calling.
"You're falling, falling deeper into this pit, this hell.
"You can sit and watch, but there's nothing you can do.
"We'll take it all from you.
"You are a sinner through and through."

Of course, this is just another morning, just an ordinary day
Of hearing what the voices say.
But you know also what they won't say.
You know there's grace and that God redeems.
You know that even thought it seems hopeless, that God saves.
That although you are depraved and lost,
Your ways out have not been exhausted.
You are pure. You are whole.
That although you are empty, you feel full.
Even when the other side wants you to see all the darkness,
All the hate.
When they say your fate is sealed...
That you'll never be healed.
When they want you to believe that pit spirals down, down,
Deeper into silence.
When all that you can see is despair and violence...

When you know it's all just a big, fat lie...
You smile and turn away,

"Thank God there's a sky."
